Tally charts and picture graphs
Your class wants to know which snack everyone likes best. You could ask each friend and try to remember. But it is much easier to write the answers down in a neat chart! Charts help you sort and count.
Sort into groups
Data is information you collect, like the answers to a question. First, sort the data into groups. Then count each group.
Definition
Tally mark
A tally mark is one line that stands for 1 thing. You make one mark for each answer.
For every fifth mark, draw a line across the first four. That makes a bundle of 5: ||||
Here are tally marks from 1 to 5:

Tally charts
A tally chart shows each group with its tally marks. To read it, count the bundles by fives, then count on by ones.
Worked example: Read a tally chart
Kids chose a favorite fruit.

How many kids chose each fruit?
- Apple: one bundle is 5. Count on: 6, 7. That is 7.
- Banana: 1, 2, 3, 4. That is 4.
- Grapes: two bundles are 5, 10. Count on: 11. That is 11.
Worked example: Make a tally chart
Mia asked her friends, "Sun, rain or snow?" Here are the answers:

Cross off each picture as you make a mark for it.

Common mistake
Don't draw a fifth line standing up next to the other four. The fifth line goes across them. Then a bundle is easy to spot as 5.
Picture graphs
A picture graph uses a picture for each thing. Each picture stands for 1. Line the pictures up so the rows are easy to compare.
Worked example: From tally chart to picture graph
This tally chart shows pets in Room 5.

Draw one picture for each tally mark:

The dog row is longest, so dogs are the most common pet. There are 5 dogs.
Tip
When you finish a chart, add up all the groups. The total should match how many answers you collected.
