Picture graphs
A picture graph shows data with little pictures. One look tells you which group is biggest. You can also use the graph to add and subtract.
Reading a picture graph
Every picture graph has a title, a label for each row, and a key. The key tells you what one picture means. In this lesson, each picture stands for 1.
Key idea
To find how many are in a group, count the pictures in that row. Longer rows mean more.

- How many kids voted for banana? Count the banana row: 6.
- Which snack got the fewest votes? The shortest row is grapes, with 3.
Adding and comparing
Picture graphs help you answer "how many in all?" and "how many more?"
- In all or together: add the rows.
- How many more or how many fewer: subtract the smaller row from the bigger row.
Worked example: How many more?
Use the Favorite Snack graph. How many more kids chose banana than grapes?
Banana has 6. Grapes has 3. .
3 more kids chose banana.
Worked example: How many in all?
Use the Favorite Snack graph. How many kids voted in all?
Add every row: .
18 kids voted.
Common mistake
"How many more" does not mean add! Find the difference by subtracting.
Making a picture graph
Draw one picture for each thing. Line the pictures up neatly so rows are easy to compare.
Worked example: Make a picture graph
Room 7 has 5 dogs, 4 cats and 2 fish as pets. Draw one 🐾 for each pet.
