You can add small numbers up to 5. Now let's add bigger numbers, all the way up to 10. The same ideas still work!

Count them all

Put both groups in rows. Rows of 5 make counting easy.

Worked example: Count the rows

What is $5 + 3$ ?

The top row is 5. Keep counting: six, seven, eight. So $5 + 3 = 8$ .

You don't always have to start at one. Start at the bigger number. Then count on for the smaller number.

Count on from the bigger number

To add $6 + 2$ , say six in your head. Then count on 2 more: seven, eight. So $6 + 2 = 8$ .

Worked example: Count on

What is $7 + 3$ ?

Start at 7. Count on 3 more, one finger for each: eight, nine, ten. So $7 + 3 = 10$ .

Worked example: Switch the order

What is $2 + 6$ ?

It is easier to start at the bigger number, 6. Count on 2: seven, eight. So $2 + 6 = 8$ .

Common mistake

When you count on, don't say the starting number again. For $6 + 2$ , start at six and say "seven, eight." Don't say "six, seven."

Tip

Doubles are fun to learn: $3 + 3 = 6$ , $4 + 4 = 8$ , $5 + 5 = 10$ . Two hands are $5 + 5$ !
