Putting groups together
You have some toys. A friend brings more toys. How many toys are there now? When you put groups together, you find out how many in all. That is called adding.
Put them together
Here are 2 red apples and 1 green apple.

Push them into one group. Now count them all: one, two, three. There are 3 apples in all.

Adding means putting groups together to find how many in all.
Count them all
To add, you can count every thing in both groups. Start at one. Touch each thing and say one number. The last number you say is how many in all.
Worked example: Ducks in a pond
3 ducks swim. 2 more ducks come.

Count all the ducks: one, two, three, four, five. There are 5 ducks in all.
Worked example: Fingers
Hold up 2 fingers on one hand. Hold up 2 fingers on the other hand.

Count all the fingers: one, two, three, four. There are 4 fingers in all.
Worked example: Two kinds of fruit

There are 3 bananas and 3 strawberries. Count them all: one, two, three, four, five, six. There are 6 pieces of fruit in all.
Common mistake
Count both groups. Don't stop at the end of the first group. Keep counting until every thing has a number.
