Counting objects to 5
How many apples are in the bowl? How many kids want a snack? To find out, you count. Let's learn to count up to 5.
The counting words
Here are the first five counting words. Say them out loud.
1 one, 2 two, 3 three, 4 four, 5 five
Always say them in the same order. One, two, three, four, five.
Touch and count
Point to each thing. Say one number for each thing you touch.

Touch the first dog: "one." Touch the next dog: "two." Touch the last dog: "three." There are 3 dogs.
How to count
Say one number for each thing. Don't skip one. Don't count one twice.
The last number you say tells how many.
Worked example: Count the stars
How many stars?

Touch and count: one, two. The last number is 2. There are 2 stars.
Worked example: Count the fish
How many fish?
🐟 🐟 🐟 🐟 🐟
Touch and count: one, two, three, four, five. There are 5 fish.
Common mistake
Go slowly! If you talk faster than you point, you might say too many numbers. Say one number, then move your finger.
Tip
Count again to check. You should get the same number both times.
