Writing numbers 0 to 10
You can say numbers and count things. Now let's learn to write numbers. A written number shows how many, even when the things are not there.
Numbers and words
Each number has a word and a way to write it.

Zero means none, so it has no dots. You will learn more about zero soon.
Count, then write
To write how many: first count the things. Then write the last number you said.
Ten is special
The numbers 0 to 9 each use one mark. Ten uses two: a 1 and then a 0. Write them side by side: 10.
Worked example: Write the number
Count the bananas. Write the number.

Count: one, two, three, four. Write 4.
Worked example: From a word
Write the number for the word six.
Count up: one, two, three, four, five, six. The number is 6.
Common mistake
6 and 9 look alike! A 6 has its round part at the bottom. A 9 has its round part at the top.
Tip
Check the way your number faces. A 3 opens to the left, like a backward C with two bumps. If it looks like a mirror picture, try again.
