Counting on from any number
You don't always have to start counting at 1. You can start at any number and keep going. This is called counting on.
Start in the middle
Say you start at 6. Count on: seven, eight, nine, ten. You skipped "one, two, three, four, five" because you already know they come first.
You can start at bigger numbers too. Start at 34: thirty-five, thirty-six, thirty-seven.
Counting on
To count on, say the start number in your head. Then say the next numbers out loud, one at a time.
Counting on with things
Counting on is a fast way to count a group when you already know part of it.
Worked example: Start at 8
Count on 3 numbers from 8.
Start at 8. Hold up a finger for each new number: nine, ten, eleven. You end at 11.
Worked example: A full row and more
How many pencils? The top row has 10.

You know the top row is 10. Don't count it again! Start at 10 and count on: eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. There are 14 pencils.
Worked example: Crossing a ten
Count on from 58. Say the next 4 numbers.
Fifty-nine, sixty, sixty-one, sixty-two. The numbers are 59, 60, 61, 62.
Common mistake
Don't count the start number again. If you start at 8, the first number you say out loud is 9, not 8.
Tip
Use your fingers to keep track. Put up one finger for each number you say. Stop when you have the right number of fingers up.
