Position words
"Where is my ball?" "It's under the bed!" Position words tell us where things are.
Up and down
Above means higher up. Below means lower down. You can also say on top of and under.

The sun is above the tree. The tree is below the sun.
Side to side
Beside and next to mean right by the side of something.

The dog is next to the cat.
Between means in the middle of two things.

The banana is between the apple and the grapes.
Front and back
In front of means closer to you. Behind means farther away, at the back. When you stand in line, the person ahead of you is in front of you.
Position words
above, below, on top of, under, beside, next to, between, in front of, behind
These words tell where one thing is compared to another thing.
Worked example: Above or below?

Where is the bird?
The bird is higher up than the house. The bird is above the house.

The triangle is in the middle. The triangle is between the circle and the square.
Worked example: Two ways to say it

The star is above the moon. We can also say the moon is below the star. Both are true!
Common mistake
Always check which thing you are talking about. "The cat is under the table" and "the table is under the cat" mean very different things!
