Lesson 6.4 ยท Measurement and Data
Counting and comparing groups
After you sort things into groups, you can count each group. Then you can tell which group has more and which has fewer.
Sort, count, compare
Follow three steps.
- Sort the things into groups.
- Count each group.
- Compare the numbers.
The bigger number has more
The group with the bigger number has more. The group with the smaller number has fewer. If the numbers match, the groups have the same number.
Worked example: Cats and dogs
๐ฑ ๐ถ ๐ฑ ๐ฑ ๐ถ
Sort: cats ๐ฑ ๐ฑ ๐ฑ and dogs ๐ถ ๐ถ.
Count: 3 cats and 2 dogs.
Compare: 3 is more than 2. There are more cats.
Worked example: Red and blue
๐ด ๐ต ๐ต ๐ด ๐ต ๐ต
Red: ๐ด ๐ด. That is 2.
Blue: ๐ต ๐ต ๐ต ๐ต. That is 4.
4 is more than 2. There are more blue circles. There are fewer red circles.
Worked example: Three groups
๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
Apples: 3. Bananas: 2. Grapes: 1.
3 is the biggest number, so apples have the most. 1 is the smallest, so grapes have the fewest.
Common mistake
Don't count one thing twice! Touch each thing once as you count, or cross it off.
